Will The Housing Crisis Win The Election?

It is still generally acknowledged by all political parties that there is a housing shortage in the UK, and each political party wants to offer the public alternative methods of tackling the problem in an attempt to win electoral favour.

Most political parties see the housing crisis in the UK as a possible election winning issue and each party’s election manifesto promises the general public many things, including further private rented sector (PRS) reforms and the introduction of additional legislation. There isn’t much offered by any political party for landlords, except for the promise to put an end to the private rental sector.

A recent survey by Ipsos MORI research published in January 2015 discovered a confusing conundrum, in that:

  • 75% of the public agree that there is a housing crisis in the UK
  • 48% of the public disagree there is a housing crisis in their locality

The publication of each political party’s election manifesto is intended to give the public a clearer indication of the housing priorities of the UK’s next parliament.

However, despite claims of a housing shortage nationally there are still some UK regions that have large proportions of derelict and abandoned properties, many still in a habitable condition.

The Government must allow Local Authorities to borrow more money to spend on building so they can tackle housing shortages and build 60,000 extra residential properties in five years, according to the Local Government Association

The Local Government Association (LGA) said that the nine councils listed below were unable to take on any loans at all, even though they have over 40,000 people on accommodation waiting lists.

  • Darlington Borough Council
  • Dudley Borough Council
  • Exeter City Council
  • Gosport Borough Council
  • Harrow Council
  • Royal Borough Greenwich Council
  • South Cambridgeshire District Council
  • Waverley Borough Council
  • Woking Borough Council

The LGA said lifting a cap on local authority borrowing would allow up to 60,000 new residential properties to be built in the next five years.

Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Slams Government

Government Not Doing Enough
To End Housing Shortage

A recent study by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has shown that the Government still are not doing enough to alleviate the chronic shortage of residential housing in the UK.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors have again stated that successive governments have failed to produce a coherent long-term strategy for UK housing.

The RICS housing commission may concede that some of the coalition government’s policies are producing short-term help for the UK house building industry but they are prepared to argue that successive ministers’ lack of consistency in policy over the past 50 years has exacerbated the failures of the UK property market.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors think that current Government housing policies are merely clearing up the problems left by their Labour party predecessors, and current government ministers are struggling to find a viable alternative solution to the current housing shortage.
