Government Issue Response To Tax Relief Petition

Government Issue Muted Response To Tax Relief Petition

The Government has published a response to the online petition that opposes the proposals to change the amount of tax relief on buy to let mortgages announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne, in the post election summer budget.

From April 2017 onwards landlords will only be able to claim the basic rate tax relief rather than the higher rate tax relief on buy to let mortgage payments. It is widely feared that the move will severely affect the profitability of the private rented sector (PRS).

The online petition to reverse the planned tax restrictions on individual landlords has attracted more than 23,600 signatures since being posted.

Bank Of England Governor Hints At Earlier Base Rate Hike

Is Mark Carney Eager To Raise Interest Rates?

The Governor of the Bank of England (BoE), Mark Carney, has drawn further criticism from economists after giving another mixed signal on the timing of any base rate increase away from the current historic low.

In an interview with the Sunday Times newspaper Mr Carney took great care to big up the health of the nation’s economy and insisted that the Bank of England would not wait for employed peoples wages to catch-up with the cost of living before hiking interest rates.

Mr Carney told the Sunday Times: “Wherever the finish line was in the depths of the crisis, we are much more than halfway towards that finish line now. The expansion is proceeding, momentum is more assured. The very fact we have had consistent quarters of growth in line with, or slightly better than, our forecasts shows that. We have to have the confidence that prospective real wages are going to be growing sustainably, before raising interest rates, we don’t have to wait for the fact of that turn to raise them.”

2 Million Foreign Investors Own UK Properties

Foreign Property Investors Think UK Property Is A Safe Investment

According to the accountancy group – UHY Hacker Young, the number of foreign property investors owning UK property has now exceeded 2 million.

The accountancy group analysed HMRC data and discovered that the number of overseas property investors owning and renting out property in the UK private rented sector increased by 6% in the past 12 months to 2.04 Million, up from 1.93 Million in 2012.

In the past five years the number of foreign property investors owning UK PRS property has risen by 39%.

However, the accountancy group says that the consistent growth in the number of foreign investors targeting UK property may come to a halt following the Government’s recently announced plans to charge Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the sale of properties owned by foreign investors from April 2015. A move which could discourage foreign buyers from investing in UK property when the deadline comes in to force.

North – South Divide Widens Again

A new study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that 20% of middle aged workers are property millionaires – on paper!

In the South East of England almost 30% of people in their 40s and 50s living in private residential properties can calculate their wealth to seven figures, when including savings, investments, the value of their homes and pension pots.

However, the study also revealed a sharp divide between North and South of England as well as between generations.

It claims that five times more children are growing up in households in the bottom top wealth bracket, North East, South East, wealth category as there are in the top wealth bracket.

While almost 60% of middle aged people in the South East have built up an impressive half a million pounds in savings, pension and property wealth, in the North East, 20% of the same age group have little or no assets that they can rely on.

The ONS study shows how wealth builds up through people’s working lives but begins to fall once they retire and begin using up their accumulated assets, in many cases on elderly care.
